I mean, if you&#8217;ve got a plan, please share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-f4db7864d714f8196320dc7567d32d0c wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: Well, here is an idea. Maybe you should check out a grannycore meetup because Gen Z is getting together to knit, to do needlework or other things traditionally considered granny hobbies. And that is according to the events website Eventbrite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-9350ef5078f73b8c2bb9aece01503919 wp-block-paragraph\">CASSANDRA DOMINICK: It can be really engaging in terms of, like, there can be a lot of different colors, a lot of different texture. There&#8217;s a lot of sensory satisfaction that goes along with it, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2542f510c78cd1d4f512552d6c004ecb wp-block-paragraph\">MART\u00cdNEZ: That&#8217;s Cassandra Dominick. She&#8217;s a therapist who wrote her graduate dissertation on knitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-31950861617590191c440e920e65f35c wp-block-paragraph\">DOMINICK: There&#8217;s research that shows that repetitive movements release serotonin. So, you know, that helps with, like, depression. That helps with pain management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-9512daae685e18558ec6880e93e83772 wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: Cassidy Sutter (ph) says she finds it relaxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-52e5a536888e606613760d4b9942077a wp-block-paragraph\">CASSIDY SUTTER: You can use a lot of brainpower, depending on what you&#8217;re making. Or you can do something that&#8217;s kind of mindless. So it&#8217;s really versatile in that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3e9e760053d37bf5d71f7e105c9db63b wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: She says she&#8217;s been knitting since last March and has made about 20 pieces since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-7c48d4becd87202a411048fedf962b4f wp-block-paragraph\">SUTTER: In this era of automation and fast-paced living, it&#8217;s nice to practice the delayed gratification of working on something for weeks or even, like, months. It&#8217;s, like, just a really rewarding thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-e40f9ab3f244591bd1da802f90b69a18 wp-block-paragraph\">MART\u00cdNEZ: That&#8217;s a common feeling among people who craft. A 2024 study from scientists at Anglia Ruskin University in England found that crafters reported higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. They also reported a stronger sense that life is worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-8638b52ac604ee4ff8b8371355731de7 wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: Manda Tran (ph) says knitting meetups bridge a lot of generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-01369cc74c43a869766033d7fb1a681d wp-block-paragraph\">MANDA TRAN: There&#8217;s not a lot of spaces where I would find myself talking to people that have lived much more life than me and are wiser than me, but that can share their skill and then also just their life stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-503ab081372ed2c99768249e26dc6f28 wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: And as for labeling kitting as grannycore, Tran says&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-14e83616de9b55fb694adf51fdedfe03 wp-block-paragraph\">TRAN: I think anyone who knits is cool, regardless of their age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c55f4dd6b8bcc88c17b6d24f3cd3f47b wp-block-paragraph\">MART\u00cdNEZ: So, you know, Michel, my wife and I are grannies, or grandparents, you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-9fad76e71c785d8519fc8e249f12aebc wp-block-paragraph\">MARTIN: (Laughter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-7c2b5f5e6320099a373ba159e3cb48a4 wp-block-paragraph\">MART\u00cdNEZ: And when I took this job at NPR, that means I had to take my wife&#8217;s sewing room for this home studio. Surrounded by spools of thread, bundles of yarn, bolts of fabric, all sadly unused.
